Tax Exempt Products/Line Items

Correct me if I'm wrong,
But I have vigorously searched for a way to exempt some of my line items from tax (while still taxing the rest with the normal tax rate field).

When quoting/invoicing we currently have to either tax line items manually, or create a separate quote for items that are non taxable.

Two methods for accomplishing this could be either;
1. Create a product field that would exempt the specific product from tax calculation function (product would have to be added to line item).
2. Create a checkbox or similar input option on each line item that would exempt that line item from tax calculation. 

I'm sure there's other ways to program it but yea, I imagine this functionality has sufficient enough demand to be implemented..
